Thursday, December 10, 2015 was held the awarding ceremony of the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel – Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

Biography:

Father DANIEL is a university professor with a PhD in theology; since 1980 he has been active as a lecturer at the Ecumenical Institute in Bossey – Switzerland (from 1986 to 1988) and also the deputy director of this institute. He has also held the possition of associate professor at Geneva and Friborg (Switzerland). Professor Daniel Ciobotea was elected PC Protosinghel, at the proposal of IPS Metropolitan Nicolae Corneanu, in the rank of bishop-vicar of the Archiepiscopacy of Timisoara, with the title “Lugojanul”, being ordained as an archer in the Orthodox Cathedral of Timișoara on March 4, 1990, and then being appointed archbishop of Iași and metropolitan priest of Moldova and Bukovina.

Since 1992 he has been Professor of Theology at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology “Dumitru Stăniloae” within the University. I. Cuza from Iași. He has participated in more than 200 symposia, congresses and international theological conferences, making important contributions in solving the problems debated in these meetings. He has also published over 500 studies, articles, speeches and prefixes in Romanian, over 100 studies and articles in French, English and German in magazines and collective volumes, abroad. Patriarch Daniel is also the author of theological books of special importance, as well as the holder of numerous distinctions such as: The National Order “Steaua României” in the degree of Great Cross, as crowning of all his contributions, honorary member of the Romanian Academy, Citizen of honor of Caraș-Severin County and of the city of Negrești-Oaș, Doctor Honoris Causa of “Eftimie Murgu” University of Reșița and of “1 December 1918” University of Alba-Iulia.

He also served as Vice-President and President of The Spanish Association of Professors of International Law and International Relations, First Vice-President of the International Maritime Lawyers Association (France), visiting professor at various American and European universities, including University of Social Sciences from Toulouse, Universities of Pittsburgh, Perpignan, LUISS University Guido Carli, Rome. He is an expert and international consultant in international organizations, national and state agencies (in EU, Canada, Bulgaria, Spain, Estonia, Guatemala, Lithuania, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Poland, Romania, etc.).

In addition, he is a member of numerous scientific councils and main researcher in more than 25 research projects, funded by different public institutions (regional, national and European), as well as member of the editorial committees or advisory committees of numerous Spanish publications on international law. He is also the author of numerous books and articles published in different languages, on issues related to international public law and European Union law. He holds various awards and distinctions, including the Galicia Research Award and honorary professor award at the University of Vigo.

Mr. HERMAN BERKOVITS, E.S. PhD is a contemporary leading personality in the field of medical sciences and enjoys wide popularity both in Israel and internationally. In recognition of the value of his professional activity, in 2009 he was appointed the personal doctor of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Originally from Romania, born in Maramureş, in Târgu-Lăpuş, he graduated the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Cluj, wihile, at the same time, carrying on a continuous activity for the development of the collaborative relations between Romania and Israel. As a result of the efforts made in this regard, on April 15, 2015, he was named the Honorary Consul of Romania in Israel.

Biography:

Mr. JOËL MONÉGER is professor emeritus of the University of Paris-Dauphine, leading the Jean Monnet Department. He is also an honorary director of the Droit Dauphine Institute. Professor Monéger has been teaching at the University of Paris-Dauphine since 2001, but he has also taught at the University of Orleans in 1984-2001, at Hassan II University, Casablanca, Morocco and has been Vice-President of Ascola.

He is a private law professor with extensive teaching experience in France and many other countries (USA, Spain, Argentina, Germany, Morocco and Africa, teaching in French). He is also a consultant for “commercial leasing” and European competition law issues. Biography:

Lt. Gl. (res.) Eng. cosmonaut DUMITRU DORIN PRUNARIU, PhD is an honorary member of the Romanian Academy. He held, along the years the functions of Romanian ambassador to the Russian Federation, president of the Romanian Space Agency, chairman of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS), president of the Association of Space Explorers (ASE), vice-chairman of the International Relations Committee of the European Space Agency (ESA).

On May 14, 1981, Lt. Gl. (res.) Eng. cosmonaut DUMITRU DORIN PRUNARIU, PhD participated in the Soiuz 40 mission within the “Intercosmos” space program. He has spent 7 days, 20 hours and 42 minutes in outer space.

Biography:

Mr. NORBERT REICH is a professor (Emeritus) in comparative EU Economic Law. He holds the title of Dr. Iur. (since 1966) from the University of Frankfurt, but also from the University of Main (since 1972), as well as the title of Dr. h.c. offered by the University of Helsinki (in 2000). He has a degree in law and political science from he univerities in Frankfurt (Germany), Geneva (Switzerland), Georgetown University, Washington DC (USA) and Lomonosov University in Moscow. His career includes teaching positions at Hochschule for Wirtschaft und Politik, Hamburg; tenured professor and dean of the Faculty of Law II Hamburg; Director of Zentrum für Europäische Rechtspolitik, University of Bremen, Dean of the Bremen Law School and professor until his retirement in 2005. He has also been a visiting professor at the prestigious Universities of Montpellier, Sydney, Friborg, Keele, Luzern Vilnius, Leuven, Tartu and Stanford. He has been president of ELFA (The European Law Faculties Association) and IACCL (The International Academy of Commercial and Consumer Law). In addition, Professor Norbert Reich is the author of a large number of publications, having over 400 contributions to law journals.

Mr. RICHARD SATAVA was a professor of surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center and senior scientific advisor to the US Army. His previous positions include professor of surgery at Yale University and a military appointment as professor of surgery (USUHS) in the US Army Medical Corps, assigned to the General Surgery section of Walter Reed Army Medical Center and manager of programs for Advanced Biomedical Technology at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). He holds a degree in medicine from Johns Hopkins University, and the Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia; has an internship at Cleveland Clinic, majoring in surgery at Mayo Clinic. He was also a member of the White House’s prestigious National Agricultural Health and Food Safety Coordinating Committee and was also a member of the Committee on Emerging Surgical Technology and Education of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). President of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), former President of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS) and a member of the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), as well as several surgical companies. He is a recognized author with over 200 publications and book chapters in various fields of advanced surgical technology, including space surgery, video and 3-D imaging, virtual reality surgical simulation, and objective assessment of surgical competence and training. During his 23 years of military surgery, he was an active flight surgeon, Army astronaut candidate, MASH surgeon for Grenada invasion and hospital commander during Desert Storm, while continuing his clinical surgical practice.

On Wednesday, March 25, 2015, has taken place the award ceremony of Doctor Honoris Causa to Doctor Yaman Tokat – General Surgery Specialist at Florence Nightingale Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey, Director of the Department of General Surgery and Organ Transplantation.

Biography:

Mr. Yaman Tokat, a university professor, is one of the most renowned specialists in liver surgery worldwide, being a specialist in treating pathologies such as: liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, hepatobiliary cancer, pancreatic tumors, other hepato-biliary and pancreatic diseases. He graduated and sustained his residency in General Surgery in 1992 within the Department of General Surgery of the Faculty of Aegean Medicine, is the founder of the Liver Transplant Program within the Faculty of Aegean Medicine (in 1994). He performed the first partial successful liver transplant from a living donor in Turkey. Profesor M.D. PhD Yaman Tokat is the director of the Liver Transplant Center of the Florence Nightingale Public Hospital, a function from which he helped to evaluate and set up numerous teams both in Turkey and worldwide, with over 1500 liver transplants at this successful center, which has been chosen by the European Society for Organ Transplant as the only institution eligible for training specialists on the many of the methods in liver transplantation from a living donor, trainings held and perfected by Dr. Yaman Tokat and his team, who currently perform over 100 transplants per year.

He is a Member of Parliament of Romania, representing this national and religious minority. In 2004, he was elected Vice-President of the Committee for Economic Policy, Reform, and Privatization in the Chamber of Deputies. Also, the doctor was a member of the Executive Committee of the European Jewish Congress and a member of the Board of Directors of the World Trade Center, Bucharest being part of his management decision-making member in the Managing Committee of the Romanian Association of Direct Marketing, holding a Phd in economics, former Main Researcher scientist of the Institute of Commercial Research.

He is also President of the European Center of the Oncology Cooperation Group, a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), local councilor of European Cancer Organization (ECCO).
